Australian Wildlife

As I’ve mentioned before, my favorite thing to do in the countries I visit is to rent a car and just drive. I have found this to be the absolute best way to explore places and find amazing little sites to stumble upon. Although I only rented a car for two days here in Australia, I was still able to explore a little bit. The most exciting thing we saw while driving was two kangaroos hopping through a field and then eventually in front of us on the road. We also saw some bogans in their natural habitat. It was awesome!
But my favorite stop we made was at Blackbutt Reserve. Yes, that’s really the name of this place. I laugh every time. I don’t think I’ll ever grow up. Anyway, it’s a wildlife reserve and although it wasn’t as large and open as I had hoped and expected, we got to see wallabies, koalas, beautiful colorful birds, snakes, and more.
The wallabies were so little and cute! Wallabies are little minature kangaroos – we loved them! They were extremely hard to spot as you can tell in one of the photos. But my favorite animal we saw was by far the koalas. They were so incredibly cute and fluffy. We got so lucky to have stopped by during feeding time so they were awake and snacking on leaves. Adorable!
I’ve always heard that both kangaroos and koalas are not the friendliest, but I don’t think that’s true. Of course they will be mean to you if you’re mean to them first, but I think that’s the case with any animal. The staff that were feeding the koalas were very friendly with the koalas and the koalas were friendly in return.
I also loved seeing all the beautiful colorful birds. They got very up close and personal with everyone visiting Blackbutt. It was awesome to see them so close! I really want to come back to Australia to visit the other parts of the country. Hopefully then I’ll be able to see more animals in their natural habitats!

I don’t know about koalas but I did see a kangaroo at AquaZoo in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands. I… will edit those photos at some point. Ha. They may or may not be on my comatose hard drive that I need to buy a power hub for…

I just had to look up the word bogan and I don’t think it means what you think it means. I got a good laugh out of it, though!

Those koalas are just too cute ๐ I did a year abroad in Australia and lived in Brisbane near the koala sanctuary so I got to see lots of different wildlife. I was also luck enough to see both koalas and kangaroos in the wilds. It’s so magical to see them.

Amazing photos. I’d love to go back to Australia. I went in 95 and it was amazing but it will have changed so much in all that time. We did get to see some animals as we went to the zoo but i bet the nature reserve was so much better
