Thousands upon thousands of undergraduate and graduate students are looking forward to summer internships in a professional atmosphere, but is it possible to dress the part in the season’s scorching heat? Most businesses require their interns to look professional and we all know that it is difficult to wear a pants suit when the temperature is 90 degrees.

Women enjoy expressing their individual style as well as the latest fashion trends and if you follow these quick tips, you will see that it is possible to dress for the weather and your style while still maintaining a professional look.

  • Pair an embellished body suit with a pencil skirt, blazer and killer pumps. A white blazer is perfect for summer–it adds a sophisticated feel, but still keeps things light and bright.
  • Opt for a business type dress that has a trendy vibe. Like this one from MissSelfridge.com, $74.
  • A dressy top with shorts may work to your advantage. You will be able to run those errands your boss told you to do without breaking a sweat. Try a look like this vibrant one from Lulus.com$35.00 Don’t be afraid to add a statement making jewelry piece along with it.
  • Try to color block your outfit once in a while. It may just help you stand out! If you’re not sure you can piece separates together or opt for a color block dress.

As for the shoes, some employers require heels, but ask if flats are acceptable. Personally, I’m a fan of dressy sandals, and maybe your employer is too.  You never know if you don’t ask!
