Mermaid Hair: Fishtail Braid Tutorial + How to Remedy Dry Summer Hair

After my trip to Thailand, I noticed a major difference in my hair texture. I was in excruciating heat (seriously, it got up to 110 while I was there!) and the super salty ocean for three weeks. We all know what the sun and saltwater does to our hair: it totally dries it out! So when I got back, I was in desperate need of some help.
During a trip to Costco, I found Nexxus Oil Infinite Shampoo & Conditioner. Is it just me, or is hair extra frizzy in the summer too? Ugh. Anyway, after just one use, there was a noticeable difference in my hair. It was back to its old self! One secret trick that I have when my hair is extra dry is to leave a little bit of conditioner in. I don’t do this on the scalp, but just from the neck down. Just put about a dime-sized dot and smooth it through your wet hair while still in the shower. It works wonders!
And after thinking about summer hair and swimming in the ocean, I decided to share a fishtail braid hair tutorial. It’s really so simple, and such a great style for spring and summer!
Step 1: Blow dry hair. I recommend using an anti-frizz shampoo & conditioner (current fave is the above mentioned Nexxus line) to help with a smooth foundation.
Step 2: Separate your hair into two equal halves.
Step 3: On the outer side of one of the halves, take about a 1/4 section of hair and cross it over the front. Join it with the other half, on the inner side.
Step 4: Repeat on the other half and continue, pulling the braid tight along the way.
Step 5: Secure with an elastic when you’re about 3/4 of the way down.
Step 6: Create a loose, messy look by gently pulling the braid apart as pictured, moving down the elastic. Pull more at the top and less at the bottom for an more uneven look.
And that’s it! Super simple, right?!
What do you do to keep your hair healthy in the summer heat?

Just keep trying! And if it isn’t perfect, that’s ok. Messy braids can be so cute!

Fishtail braids just look so effortlessly beautiful! I can’t wait until my hair is long enough and less layered.
