For the past few months, Ryan and I have been trying to cut back on alcohol. There are many reasons for this but it was mostly sparked by Ryan’s ambition to focus on his career and live a healthier lifestyle. We found that alcohol left us hungover not only physically, but mentally as well. Since we are both in our thirties and can no longer party like we used to, we decided to make that shift for good. It started with Dry January and after that first month, things were so much easier. There are so many drinks you can have that are non-alcoholic! I found myself truly enjoying drinking less and being more clear-headed on those nights when I do have a drink or two.
I’ve actually been coming across quite a bit of social media posts relating to the sober curious movement, so it seems like we’re not alone. Although I don’t want to become fully sober, my reasoning for cutting back is in line with those that are sober curious. The biggest thing that helped us is mocktails and alcohol alternatives. We found some really amazing NA beer, which is great for the daytime, but our absolute favorite has been NA spirits. We’ve tried a few, and these are my thoughts so far.
1. Three Spirits
Three Spirits is unique in the NA selection because it actually enhances your mood with natural ingredients like lion’s mane mushrooms. The brand calls them botanical elixirs and that just sounds amazing. There are three main spirits (hence the name, obvi), they are: Livener, an energizing, vibrant, fruity drink slightly reminiscent of kombucha without the bubbles; Social Elixir, a bittersweet mood elevator that calms and engages; and Nightcap, a spicy wind-down sipper that encourages peaceful sleep. I am equally obsessed with all three and finish a bottle within just a few days. It’s healthy, all-natural, and delicious. What’s not to love?!

2. Ghia
Ghia is an apéritif, reminiscent of aperol or campari. I have always hated apéritifs, however, Ghia is the exception! It has this distinct bitter taste to it that subs for the alcohol kick and I love it. It’s the perfect topper to a flavored tonic water, ginger beer, or soda. In fact, they even offer premixed cans, which Ryan loves. Ghia is what we usually go with when we want a mocktail, whether we’re with friends or just trying to avoid alcohol after a long day. Plus the branding is just superb.

3. Zero Proof
I’ve only had a chance to try one flavor of Zero Proof, Harmony. It is very earthy and has a slight licorice taste. I like this option for the end of the night since it does have chamomile in it. In all honesty, it’s not my absolute favorite since I’m not a fan of licorice, but I am definitely looking forward to trying their other flavors!
I can honestly say I never thought I would be into mocktails. I mean, what’s next? Decaf coffee? In all seriousness though, these NA spirits have helped me improve my life so I’m excited to share my experience. We drink these after work when it’s time to chill and it truly feels like a luxurious wind-down. On those days that we do decide to drink, we might start with a Three Spirits Social Elixir to elevate our mood or Livener to give us a touch of energy, or after dinner and wine, we will have a Ghia mocktail as a nightcap. I was so surprised when I discovered that substituting one last drink for a mocktail allowed me to keep my buzz, keep chatting and sipping, and feel better in the morning. It feels like I’ve found a life hack!
Would you ever consider non-alcoholic drinks?

100% I don’t see myself going totally sober, but on an everyday basis it has helped so much! I’m definitely sleeping better and have less brain fog. We have to make some delicious mocktails next time we’re together!!

I am FASCINATED by this concept! I’ve been cutting back on alcohol a lot lately myself and my husband and I frequently do dry months. I love that there are so many awesome options for NA spirits! I can’t wait to try these.
