poco azul azores, poco azul Achadinha portugal, Poço Azul, what to do in the azores, sao miguel island, where to go in the azores, hidden gems in the azores, hiking on sao miguel island, hiking in the azores

Deep in the forest in a land far far away, is a beautiful turquoise blue lagoon called Poço Azul. This enchanted hidden gem is reached only after a treacherous journey, ensuring only the most deserving are rewarded with enjoying its splendor. One day, a beautiful princess happened upon the lagoon and went in for a dip. The next day, she posted the photo on Instagram, gained a million followers, and became world famous. She never had to work again and she lived happily ever after. The end. Now that’s my kind of fairytale, ya feel me?!

For real though, Poço Azul is 100% like something out of a storybook. I could barely believe my eyes when we finally, finally reached the pretty little pool. Poço Azul is located in Achadinha on São Miguel Island. You can only get there by walking/like level 8 hiking and it is much further than the sign says. There is a very small parking lot – so small in fact that we missed it the first time we drove by. We ended up just parking on the road right by the sign of the hiking trails and we were fine. Not that there are patrol officers looking to give parking tickets or tow trucks in The Azores anyway…

So when you walk up, there’s a sign that says Poço Azul – 170m. Not bad at all, right? We were like perf, let’s go check it out and if it’s good, I’ll go back and get my camera. Umm NOPE. No way. It is definitely NOT 170m. And you 100% need hiking shoes for this trail. Both Meghann and I wore sandals. It sucked. There are lots of “stairs,” hills, tree trunks, everything along the way. Trust me, get it together and wear hiking shoes or athletic shoes. I’ll never say the hike wasn’t worth it, I just wish I knew ahead of time. When we left, we took a closer look at the sign, and there’s the tiniest, faintest 0 next to the super dark and bold 170m. That’s right, 1700m. That’s a lot more like it. Whatever. I’m not still bitter about it.

Seriously though, it was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. The water was absolutely freezing, but there was no way I wasn’t going to get some amazing photos here. So I stripped down and did my thang. Hey, you’re only young once, right?
