When my friend Claudia and I decided to make a quick trip to Croatia while we were in Venice, I did some research and ultimately decided on Split. It looked the coolest in all the photos, and we were able to find flights that worked with our schedule, so it was perfect. I knew some of Game of Thrones was filmed in Croatia and Split was one of the cities they filmed in. Split is Meereen and Dubrovnik is King’s Landing. I knew I definitely had to see some filming locations, so I’m so glad it worked out! Check out my Khalessi impression below. Fun fact: my unicorn that makes appearances on my Instagram account is named Khaleesi! Anyway…
On our first day in Croatia, we went on a tour with an amazing tour guide, Dino. I’ll share more on that in my travel guide, but after seeing how interested I was in the filming locations in Diocletian’s Palace, he was kind enough to take us to Klis Fortress on day 2 of our trip. It’s about 20 minutes outside of the city and absolutely breathtaking. The views are incredible and it was so fascinating to not only see spots I recognized from the show, but learn about the real history of the location. It’s crazy, but a lot of what happens in Game of Thrones is very similar to the real history of Croatia.
I love seeing the filming locations of Game of Thrones for that reason (remember when I visited The Dark Hedges and The Rope Bridge in Northern Ireland?). The creators and staff of the show (or whoever is in charge of locations) does such a great job in location scouting. They pick the most realistic places for their scenes and to bring the story to life. The places are realistic because similar things happened there. Believe it or not, one of the filming locations for Meereen actually has a dragon sculpture built into the wall! So cool. I really learned to love history so much more on this trip to Croatia. Can’t wait to share more!
