Space Saving Home Decor Tips

As a twenty-something living in a city, I have run into quite a few issues when it comes to home decor. Not only are city apartments tiny, but they’re also super expensive. Throw in the fact that I live with a man, and home decor is no easy feat. Not only do I need to furnish and decorate on a budget, but I also need to make the space gender neutral.
I am happy to say that I have finally completed my living room space. After a few failures, Iย wanted to share what really worked for me and my space!
1. Shop the discounts
We got our $1800 couch for just $200 from TJ Maxx. We had been eyeing the couch from when it was $500 and kept watching it get marked down. We had a little time to plan, but the moment we saw that $200 price tag, we listed our current seatingย (Johnny’s parents’ old chairs that were just so not our style) on craigslist and never looked back. We ended up selling them for $150, so it was a pretty nice trade! Our chairs & rug were also bought on sale at Target – score! It’s also important to remember to let the decorating process be just that – a process. No need to rush and do everything all at once if you’re working with a tight budget.
before we added the coffee table
Our coffee table wasn’t on sale, but we got it at a really great affordable source for furniture: American Signature Furniture (aka Value City Furniture in some areas). There were actually a few different coffee tables Johnny and I were eyeing, but ultimately decided on this one for one main reason: its versatility, which brings me to my next point.
2. Opt forย multi-use pieces
The coffee table we got not only shelves a storage space beneath the table surface, but it also lifts up to become a desk, dining table, or craft space. The convenience of that, paired with the winning price made it a no-brainer for us. Since we don’t have much space, any time we can convert one thing to be something else, we take advantage. We use our piano as an indoor garden, after all.
{ coffee table โ American Signature // couch: TJ Maxx (similar) // chairs: Target // mug โ Soft Surroundings // rug: Target // tunic โ ย Soft Surroundings // plant stand: Ikea // mini greenhouse: Ikea }
3. Keep itย balanced
As you can tell, our mainย palette is grey. This color is both gender neutral and clean to start with. We added navy as an accent with masculine wood elements and feminine metallic elements. The colors and textures aren’t too extreme on their own (like frillyย lace or a bachelor-style beanbag/Xbox station), so they create a nice balance when paired together. We keep the space lively by adding plants and fresh flowers each week.
I couldn’t be happier with the living room, as I feel it suits both Johnny and I equally. I’d hate to make him live in a girly space. Although he does claim our bedroom is girly, but that’s a different story.
What are your home decor tips?

Too true! And isn’t it funny how over time, that little space tends to shrink to even less space?
