I remember back in the 90s when I lived in Alabama, root beer floats were one of my favorite things in the summer (that and boiled peanuts – yum!). But now that I’m an adult, I rarely drink soda or eat ice cream, much less treat myself with a root beer float. So when Danasia suggested we try mixing our Whynatte with rum and root beer I thought, “why not?” (hehe).
So after some brainstorming and chatting back and forth, we came up with the idea of a root beer float, big girl style. The results could not have been better. Here’s what we used to make two big kid root beer floats:
1 can Whynatte
2 scoops mocha gelato
2 scoops vanilla bean gelato
4oz rum
10oz root beer
For our big kid root beer float recipe, start with the mocha gelato. Add one scoop into each glass. Next, pour two oz rum into each glass. Then split the can of Whynatte evenly. Next, add 3oz of root beer to each glass. Top off each float with a scoop of vanilla bean gelato. Finally, pour in 2oz of root beer into each glass to really get it fizzing. And that’s it! You now have your very own adult root beer float complete with luxurious gelato, delicious Whynatte, and a little kick of booze.
Danasia and I seriously loved this even more than we expected. All of the flavors really complement each other very nicely. Check out Danasia’s write-up on The Urban Realist here.
Have you ever tried an adult version of a root beer float? How did you make yours?

Root beer floats always look so amazing to me. I think it’s just because I’m automatically drawn to anything with ice cream. But I don’t like root beer. haha so I usually do coke or pepsi floats.
