venice in september

I am all about visiting destinations when it’s not tourist season. Although Venice is pretty popular in September, it’s not the height of the season, so it wasn’t too incredibly crowded when I was there. We went not too long after the Venice Film Festival, which kind of seems to be the last big hoorah of the tourist season. Venice in September is absolutely beautiful. When I was there, it was unseasonably cool, but I thought it was perfect. It wasn’t summer weather, but it was warm in the sun without the need for a jacket and a little cooler at night.

I’ve talked about the amazing tours I went on while in Venice, but the aimless wandering was just as fun. Venice is pretty small and totally walkable, so it’s not scary to walk all day and get lost along the alleyways and canals. Luckily I have an international plan, so gps isn’t an issue, but the people are so friendly that asking how to get to Rialto or St. Mark’s would be very easy.

One of our wanderings landed us by this pretty hotel and restaurant. It looked a little boojie, so we didn’t stop in, but it made a great backdrop for photos, don’t you think? I wore this red printed maxi dress and felt totally comfortable in the sun. I did bring a jacket for the shade and after the sun went down, but I really ended up wearing it tied around my waist for most of the day.

We ended our day atop Fondaco dei Tedeschi. Like I mentioned in a previous post, it’s a high-end department store with a free terrace of 360 views on top. So incredibly breathtaking. We could actually see “support” from there. It’s something I’ll never forget. And we went right at sunset. How amazing in that light?! Although it did rain a couple of the days, I’m so glad I visited in September.

Have you ever been to Venice?
