White Wine in Santorini

When researching things to do in Santorini, one of the options that stood out to me most was the fact that the island has 40 wineries. Yes, please! I love visiting wineries and my sister has never been to one, so I knew we had to visit a few while we were there. When we checked into our hotel, we were offered a private wine tour, and we booked it right away.

Santorini is known for its Assyrtiko wine. They don’t have traditional wines we’re more familiar with here in the US, because there is a law prohibiting the import of plants and foods, including grapes, so they can only use grapes that are native to Santorini to make their wine. The white wine isn’t super dry or sweet, but well-balanced and refreshing. I loved it! Another wine they’re well known for is their vinosanto. This is a dessert wine that uses dried grapes (aka raisins). Personally, I’ll take the white.

For our private wine tour, I wore my favorite outfit of the trip: this fab set from South Moon Under. The top is a bodysuit (that I loved so much I got it in two colors), and these super comfortable flowy pants (on sale!!!) with front slits. I had been planning to wear this outfit for our wine tour the entire trip, so I was so excited to finally do so.

On our tour, we went to three wineries before heading to the famed lighthouse to watch the sunset. Unfortunately, it was too cloudy to see the sun, but it was still a pleasant experience. Our driver/tour guide actually hooked us up with some of his own homemade wine, which was pretty cool. My favorite wineries we went to were Gavalas (the one in the photos here with the white background) and Venetsantos, Santorini’s oldest winery. The view here is absolutely breathtaking and tasting wine on the terrace here was probably one of the best moments of my life.
